Claims Equality with God

Claims Equality with God

The following show how unapologetically and absolutely Jesus claims to being equal with God.

Equivalency Reference Verse
The Father discloses everything He is doing to the Son John 5.20 "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel."
Equal with God in giving life John 5.21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes."

Jesus gives life to whom He wishes. "Life" refers, on one level, to Jesus’ ability to physically raise the dead, as He did on three recorded occasions:

  • The widow of Nain’s son (Luke 7:11-17)
  • Jairus’ daughter (Luke 8:49-56)
  • Lazarus (John 11:1-44)

His power to give physical life to whomever He wills show us that He also has the power to give spiritual life. In John 5:24 he says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life."

Equal with God in judgement John 5.22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son …."

The Father has delegated all judgment to the Son.

Honoring Him is the same as honoring God John 5.23 "… so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him."

What created being could say that we should honor him just as we honor the Father? Jesus is claiming to be God.

Knowing Him is the same as knowing God John 8.19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?"
"You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
Believing in Him is the same as believing in God John 14.1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
Seeing Him is the same as seeing God John 14.9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
