His Trial

His Trial

At the trial of Jesus, He makes a profound and outrageous claim:
He directly claims to be the Messiah.

Mark 14.61-64 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?"

But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him,

"Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"

"I am," said Jesus.
"And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked.
"You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?"
1 Jesus is asked, point blank, are you the Mesaiah? He answers directly: I am (Yes).

2 Jesus says I AM, referencing Exodus 3.14, where Moses asked God for His Name and God answers: I AM THAT I AM, identifying Himself as the God of the Old Testament.

3 "coming in the clouds" is a reference to Daniel 7:13 which refers to the Messiah (son of man) coming in the clouds:
"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence."

4 In the historical context, it is clear to the high priest that Jesus is claiming to be the Messiah, equality with God, i.e. blasphemy.
